Welcome to my virtual reality

We are living in truly exciting times. In which technology is enabling us to reach deeper, aim higher and go further than any human has ever been before. We are able to create synthetic life, edit our genetic blueprint, build quantum supercomputers, enter virtual worlds of galactic proportions and infuse all of this with Artificial Intelligence.

This is rapidly and irreversibly changing the world we live in and invites each and everyone of us to ask ourselves these questions: 'what is this reality I find myself in, what is it comprised of and how do I navigate it?' And even more so: 'who am I and what does it mean to truly be Human in this High Tech world?' #knowthyself

The theoretical physicist John Wheeler once used the phrase “great smoky dragon” to describe a particle of light going from a source to a photon counter. “The mouth of the dragon is sharp, where it bites the counter. The tail of the dragon is sharp, where the photon starts,” Wheeler wrote. The photon, in other words, has definite reality at the beginning and end. But its state in the middle — the dragon’s body — is nebulous. “What the dragon does or looks like in between we have no right to speak.”

“Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.”

That quote, from British philosopher Alan Watts, reminds us that we humans have access to something special: the spark of awareness we call consciousness combined with the capacity to reflect on that experience.

Defining consciousness can be incredibly complex. Entire books have been written on the topic. But in the context of human flourishing and this essay, when I say “consciousness,” I’m simply referring to the feeling of being—the fact of knowing phenomenon from a first-person perspective. Consciousness is a silent, ever-present field of awareness in which all personal experience arises, and it’s unique to each conscious entity. It is your first-person experience, your subjectivity, the fact that it is like something to be you at all.
